ISimQ@NAFEMS World Congress 2021 – Mesh Adaptation for Turbomachinery ISimQ@NAFEMS World Congress 2021 – Mesh Adaptation for Turbomachinery Pointwise (now cadence) and ISimQ have developed a mesh adaptation procedure for challenging turbomachinery CFD simulations. The adaptation creates a mesh that robustly conforms to the underlying geometry, respects locally anisotropic boundary layer mesh refinement and is driven by an adaptation sensor that accurately resolves secondary flow features. The method controls numerical error in the discrete solution by minimising truncation errors. New mesh adaptation applied to a pump ISimQ has applied the mesh adaptation procedure to the speedline of a pump for 80 % to 120 % of the design flow rate. The results show that off-design operating points require more mesh adaptation than the design-point flow. On Tuesday, 24 August 2021 at 17:15 h (CET), Paul Galpin of ISimQ will present simulation results for the flow around the DrivAer car model and compare them to the experimental data of Technical University Munich. Paul performed the simulations with the geometry-sensitive mesh adaptation algorithm developed by Pointwise (now cadence) and ISimQ. Become a Fan of Fan 2022! Become a Fan of Fan 2022! The design of fans has evolved to meet the increasing demands for higher efficiency machines, lower noise, and high availability. In addition, many fans are being used in safety-related applications. Variable speed is now more common, leading to added design problems as users revisit their plants, looking at ways to upgrade the fans. The use of numerical simulation techniques is also becoming an established part of aerodynamic design processes. ISimQ contributes to Scientific Advisory Committee The “International Conference on Fan Noise, Aerodynamics, Applications and Systems”, Fan 2022, is a forum for fan and system designers, manufacturers, and operators to improve the understanding of fans and their system interaction. It will take place from 6 – 8 April 2022 in Senlis, France. ISimQ contributes to the Scientific Advisory Committee. The call for papers is now open. Workshop und Training zur Erzeugung hexahedraler Rechennetze Live-Online: Workshop & Training zur Erzeugung hexahedraler Rechennetze CFD-Berechnungen erster Güte stehen und fallen mit einer effizienten und qualitativ hochwertigen Vernetzung von Geometriemodellen. Dafür können verschiedene Elementtypen eingesetzt werden – allgemeine Polyeder und Tetraeder. Doch diese haben Vor- und Nachteile. Mit ihnen lassen sich zwar hohe Automatisierungsgrade erreichen, sie verlieren aber an Effizienz, wenn dünne Scherschichten in Wandnähe oder Geometrien mit hohen Seitenverhältnissen zu vernetzen sind, wie zum Beispiel Ringspalte in Strömungsmaschinen und Kanäle in Brennstoffzellen. Hier sind Hexaederelemente gefragt. Die Erzeugung hexahedraler Rechennetze ist aber nur begrenzt automatisierbar und benötigt daher einen gut durchdachten manuellen Input. Dazu bieten wir in Zusammenarbeit mit CADFEM einen zweitägigen Live-Online-Lehrgang und Workshop „Erzeugung hexahedraler Rechennetze mit ANSYS ICEM CFD“ an. Wir zeigen im Seminar den Einsatz und die Handhabung der Software für zwei- und dreidimensionale Anwendungen, beginnend mit dem Import von CAD-Modellen bis hin zum Einlesen und Anrechnen in CFD-Software. ISimT-20 – Symposium on Innovative Simulations in Turbomachinery ISimT-20 – “Symposium on Innovative Simulations in Turbomachinery” Like many other live events, we had to cancel this year’s ISimT-20, our “Symposium on Innovative Simulations in Turbomachinery” which we had planned for November 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we want to continue to offer a platform for the exchange of trends and developments in turbomachinery-related CFD simulation and use the possibilities of online meetings for this. Therefore, we have considered a unique format for this unique year: ISimT-20 as a compact online webinar on 19 November 2020, 15:00 h – 16:30 h (CET). The event highlights opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SME) arising from digitisation. Digitisation provides opportunities – use them!
